On January 31, 2024, in the province of Sofala, in the district of Muanza, a disturbing incident unfolded on a public street. Two traffickers were apprehended in possession of a highly sought-after and protected commodity: lion teeth. They intended to sell these items at a very high price, claiming they had obtained them by killing a lion in Gorongosa National Park.
Gorongosa National Park, known for its rich biodiversity and as a sanctuary for iconic species like lions, should be a safe haven for wildlife. However, the brazen act of killing a lion within its borders for profit highlights the urgent need for stronger enforcement measures and community engagement to protect our natural heritage.
This incident underscores the critical importance of addressing wildlife trafficking in Mozambique. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats faced by our wildlife and the need for concerted efforts to combat illegal activities that endanger our natural ecosystems.
