Mozambican authorities recently detained a suspect in possession of four ivory tusks weighing approximately 54 kilograms during an operation in a neighborhood of a district near Limpopo National Park.
The operation was launched following intelligence that two individuals were attempting to sell ivory at an extremely high price. Local police were immediately mobilized and, acting on the information received, apprehended one of the suspects found in possession of the tusks. The second individual managed to escape and remains at large.
Preliminary reports suggest the ivory originated from within Limpopo National Park, an area that continues to be targeted by poaching networks due to its rich wildlife populations.
According to the investigation, the group operated under the guise of selling clothing in villages surrounding the park. This common tactic allows traffickers to move discreetly within communities, acquire wildlife trophies, and facilitate illegal sales without raising suspicion.
This case underscores the urgent need to strengthen surveillance around national parks and intensify efforts to disrupt wildlife trafficking networks, which continue to pose a serious threat to protected species and national biodiversity. Authorities are continuing their investigation and efforts to locate the second suspect.
