Our team received an alert that 15 pairs of ivory, equivalent to 30 tusks, were being offered for sale in Zumbo - Tete. The seller had acquired these tusks with the intention of selling them in Zimbabwe.
The suspect is a well-known and elusive trafficker who has been supplying Zambia and Zimbabwe with wildlife products obtained through illegal hunting in Tchuma Tchato, using homemade firearms known as "maguguda." These firearms are supplied with ammunition that he purchases in Zambia from his regular and illicit suppliers. Occasionally, he collaborates with these suppliers for poaching activities and shares the proceeds.
On March 29, 2023, a successful operation took place, in collaboration with ANAC and the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), and led to the arrest of the suspect and one more trafficker in possession of 10 ivory tusks in Zumbo, who were subsequently transferred to Tete.
