Pangolins for Sale in Tete: A Disturbing Reality

In the province of Tete, in the Chiuta district, our team received a report that a live pangolin is being offered for sale by an intermediary. This rare and endangered species was discovered in an area seemingly close to a concession.

Initially, these individuals were involved in the illegal trade of these remarkable creatures in Malawi. However, they have since shifted their operations to Mozambique, believing that they can fetch higher prices for pangolins here.

In partnership with ANAC and SERNIC, we were able to apprehend the 2 individuals and the pangolin was reintegrated successfully in its natural habitat.

The sale of pangolins, whether alive or their scales and body parts, is not only illegal but also detrimental to the survival of this unique and highly vulnerable species. Pangolins are often poached for their scales and meat, which are falsely believed to have medicinal properties in some cultures. This illegal trade poses a severe threat to their already scarce populations.

We urge anyone with information about the sale or trafficking of pangolins or other endangered species to report it to the local authorities or conservation organizations. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a brighter future for pangolins in Mozambique and beyond.
