Lion Skin Seized in Niassa Province

On September 19, 2024, two individuals were apprehended in Cuamba District, Niassa Province. They were found in possession of a lion skin, which they were attempting to sell at a very high price. The operation was carried out in collaboration with local authorities, and the suspects are now in custody in Cuamba District.

Lions are a protected species in the region due to their vital role in maintaining ecological balance and the significant decline in their populations over the years. As apex predators, lions help regulate populations of herbivores, which in turn keeps the ecosystem healthy and prevents overgrazing. Unfortunately, habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal trade have all contributed to a decrease in lion numbers, making conservation efforts more important than ever.
