Ivory Trafficking Bust in Manica Province

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

On August 6, 2023, in the province of Manica, in the Sussundenga district, within the administrative post of Moha, our team, in collaboration with ANAC, SERNIC and Chimanimani National Park fiscals, apprehended a group of four traffickers, caught red-handed with two ivory tusks and elephant teeth in their possession.

The ivory tusks, weighing a staggering 50 kg in total, were intended for an illicit trade. The man behind this illegal operation admitted to killing the elephant in the Chimanimani National Park, along with an accomplice who was not involved in the subsequent sale.

He provided a gruesome account of their hunting method, explaining that they dug a large pitfall along an elephant's path, causing the elephant to fall into the trap. Afterward, they mercilessly killed the magnificent creature. The tools they used for this sinister act were not disclosed, but the police are diligently investigating the case. Shockingly, he also confessed that this was not his first time engaging in such elephant poaching activities.

This disturbing incident sheds light on the persistent and alarming issue of ivory trafficking in the region. It serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for increased efforts to combat wildlife crime and protect the endangered elephant populations in our national parks.

As authorities continue to investigate this case, it is essential for us to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of illegal wildlife trade and work together to ensure the survival of these gentle giants.
