A significant operation in Magoé District, Tete Province, has led to the confiscation of a total of four ivory tusks weighing approximately 30 kg. The ivory, originating from Zimbabwe, was being offered for sale by Zimbabwean traffickers, who had entered Mozambique and were staying with a local resident in Magoé while waiting for buyers. The ivory was being sold at an exorbitant price, with the traffickers planning to return to Zimbabwe after finalizing the deal.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with ANAC at the Daque outpost near Magoé National Park, also resulted in the seizure of a firearm casing from a 375-caliber shotgun and the arrest of three suspects. During the operation, one member of the group managed to escape. Despite authorities' efforts, the remaining suspects have refused to provide information about the fugitive, claiming they only gathered to complete the sale.
Further investigations revealed an additional two ivory tusks near the border, which were combined with the two already seized, bringing the total to four tusks.
