A tip-off was received that in Marromeu, in the Saloni area, there is one factory producing mechanical traps. This factory is owned by a man who engages in this activity along with his two sons. They sell traps of various sizes, including large ones designed for capturing lions and buffalos, as well as smaller traps and also Canhagurus. Additionally, in the region, there are three more illegal trap factories located in Nhamicoma, Bawadzi, and Nhansa.
In a joint operation conducted on September 17, 2023, by ANAC and SERNIC in the Sofala province, two homemade trap factories were dismantled. These factories were also found to have a significant amount of materials used for trap production. According to statements provided during the operation, one of the factory owners claimed to work alongside his son and mentioned that he has trained several individuals in the area. Four young people trained by him now operate their own active trap factories.
This operation sheds light on the scale of this illicit activity and its impact on wildlife in the region. Efforts to dismantle these operations are crucial in safeguarding the local ecosystem and protecting endangered species from harm. Continued vigilance and collaboration between authorities and communities will be essential in combating this illegal trade and ensuring a sustainable future for Marromeu and its unique biodiversity.
