On July 13, 2024, two illegal gin trap production factories were dismantled in Nhamatica, Macossa District, Manica Province. The factories' owners were also apprehended during the operation.
The authorities discovered 50 rat traps and various materials being prepared to become traps, including six pliers, three EDM cables, one EDM support iron, four large hammers, 25 axes, one complete rod, seven chisels, five liters of burnt oil, and five car springs. The suspects admitted that part of their work involved training new manufacturers in the production of these traps.
These illegal trap factories pose a significant threat to wildlife. The traps are often used to capture and kill animals indiscriminately, including protected and endangered species. Such traps can cause severe injury or death to animals that are not intended targets, disrupting local ecosystems and endangering biodiversity. By dismantling these factories, authorities are taking a crucial step toward protecting wildlife and preserving biodiversity in the region.
