Combating Wildlife Trafficking: Unified Efforts in Mozambique

In May 2024, Mozambique's National Conservation Administration (ANAC) led a comprehensive effort alongside the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), TRACE Wildlife Forensics Network, and conservation partners such as Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (MWA), to combat wildlife crime.

Central to the initiative were detailed tasks such as processing seized ivory. This involved weighing each piece, carefully identifying species and origins, and meticulously documenting findings in a comprehensive database. These efforts were vital for establishing a strong forensic foundation to understand and disrupt illegal wildlife trade routes effectively.

Additionally, teams carefully collected DNA samples from the seized ivory. This scientific approach aimed to trace the geographical origins of the ivory, providing critical insights into smuggling networks and enhancing law enforcement's ability to prosecute wildlife criminals.

By integrating these efforts, the coalition aims to safeguard Mozambique's rich biodiversity and ensure the long-term sustainability of its natural resources. This collaborative approach underscores a commitment to conservation and highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing wildlife crime.
